The Divine Story of Lord Hanuman
Birth of Hanuman
In the land of Kishkindha, a pious woman named Anjana worshiped Lord Shiva to be blessed with a child. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva granted her a boon. Around the same time, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya performed a Yagna for children, and as a divine coincidence, a portion of the sacred pudding (Payasam) blessed by the gods was carried by the wind god, Vayu, to Anjana. She consumed it and soon gave birth to a radiant and powerful child—Hanuman, an incarnation of Lord Shiva himself.
Since he was blessed by Vayu, Hanuman was also called Vayu Putra (Son of Wind). His childhood was filled with divine playfulness, and his strength was immeasurable.
Hanuman’s Childhood and Curse
One day, the young Hanuman mistook the rising sun for a ripe mango and leaped into the sky to eat it. As he approached, the gods were alarmed, and Lord Indra struck him with his thunderbolt (Vajra), sending him crashing to the ground. Vayu, enraged at this act, withdrew all the air from the universe, causing suffocation among beings.
The gods realized their mistake and blessed Hanuman with immense strength, wisdom, and immortality. However, as he was very mischievous, he was cursed to forget his powers until someone reminded him.
Hanuman Meets Lord Rama
Years later, Hanuman became the chief minister of the monkey king Sugriva. When Lord Rama and Lakshmana arrived in Kishkindha searching for Sita, Hanuman met them and immediately recognized Rama as his Lord. He fell at Rama’s feet and vowed eternal devotion to him. Hanuman played a crucial role in uniting Rama with Sugriva, helping him reclaim his kingdom from his tyrant brother, Vali.
Hanuman Leaps Across the Ocean
When Sita was abducted by Ravana and taken to Lanka, Lord Rama’s army searched for her. The only way to find her was to cross the vast ocean to Lanka. This is when Jambavan, the wise bear, reminded Hanuman of his forgotten powers. Realizing his strength, Hanuman grew in size and, with a mighty leap, crossed the ocean.
